Because nothing is better than a Pinterest-worthy plait
Braids are still trending as a look — they were all over the runway this season in every form. Behold, some major plait porn (and instructions for how to do it yourself) that will have you wanting to learn how to do every type of braid imaginable.
Modern Milkmaid Braid
Part your hair down the center and create a loose fishtail braid on both sides (note: you need medium to long hair to pull this off). Secure each braid with an elastic band. Pull the braids over the top of your head, crisscrossing them to create a headband effect. Fasten the braids into place with bobby pins. Keep it cool-girl and pull a few wispy, face-framing strands out around the hairline.
Knotted Braid
Prep your hair with a texturizing paste (such as Phyto Professional Matte Texture Paste) for grip and texture. Then, divide your hair into five sections (one at the top, one on each side, and two in the back), and twist each one into it's own knot as if you're making mini messy buns. Loop the ends, creating mini ponytails, and secure with black elastics. The end result will look like a one big effortless braid.
Boho Pony Braid
Start by making one thin braid (about the width of two fingers) on the side of your head where your natural part falls. Then pull your hair and the braid into a messy pony (you can tease the unbraided hair to give it texture). Finish by taking a piece of hair from under your pony and wrapping it around the base of your hair tie (it will look super cool against your pony's wild texture).
Mini Mohawk Braids
Channel your inner Cara Delevingne and make inch-wide French braids starting at the hairline (spacing them about an inch apart), stopping at the mid-length. Once you've created all the braids, pull them hair into a high pony and use a curling wand to add soft bends to the end of your ponytail.
Chic Bun Braid
Start by making a loose French braid. Next, take the bottom third of your braid and tuck it under at the nape of your neck. Secure it against your head beneath the thickest part of your braid for a chic bun.
Flirty Fishtail Braid
First, prep your hair with a styling lotion like Redken Braid Aid 03 to prevent strands from slipping out of the braid. Then, gather the top layer of your hair (leaving out a few pieces by your temples) and make a traditional fishtail braid. With the remaining pieces, make two smaller fishtail braids starting above your ears. Finally, tie the smaller fishtails on top of your bigger fishtail. Leave the bottom layer of your hair unbraided.
Braided Power Pony
To create this date-night look, slick your hair back and pull it into a high pony. Coat the tail with shine serum and create a fishtail braid. Wrap the base of your pony braid with your hair to make it extra chic.
Messy Braided Updo
Make a regular French braid and secure it with an elastic band. Then, starting with the roots, loosen all the pieces to make the braid look lived-in. Once you get to the bottom, wrap the bottom third of the braid into a loose bun at the nape of your neck and secure with bobby pins. Finally, mist salt spray all over for effortless texture.
Braided Ballerina Bun
Sweep your hair into a high ponytail (use shine spray to get rid of any frizziness at the crown). Braid the tail of your pony into a tight single braid. Once you've made the braid, starting wrapping it around the base of your pony, tucking the very end under your hair tie to secure it in place.
Twisted Braid
Take a 3-inch section from each side of your head and split each section into two pieces. Twist the pieces together from mid-length to tip into a pseudo braid and repeat it on the other side. Finally, loosely tie both sections together at the back of your head.
